Wildfires are dynamic, fast-moving incidents that demand equally dynamic suppression strategies. Among the many tools available to firefighters, aircraft provide a unique capability: the ability to rapidly influence fire behavior across large areas while supporting firefighters on the ground.¹˒²
Today’s aerial firefighting fleet includes helicopters, Single Engine Airtankers (SEATs), Airtankers, Large Airtankers (LATs), Very Large Airtankers (VLATs), amphibious scoopers, lead aircraft, aerial supervision platforms, and increasingly, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). Working together, these aircraft deliver water, long-term fire retardants, Class A foams, and water-enhancing gels in support of coordinated suppression strategies directed through the Incident Command System (ICS).³˒⁴
Although aircraft often represent the most visible aspect of wildfire suppression, they rarely extinguish large wildfires independently. Instead, they are employed to create tactical advantages that reduce fire intensity, slow fire spread, reinforce containment lines, protect lives and property, and improve firefighter safety. Their greatest value lies in supporting ground resources by creating opportunities for firefighters to safely and effectively contain the fire.⁴˒⁵

Behind the Tactic
Every aerial drop represents a tactical decision. Experienced Air Tactical Group Supervisors (ATGS), Helicopter Coordinators (HLCOs), Incident Commanders, and pilots continuously evaluate fire behavior, fuels, weather, terrain, available resources, and firefighter safety to determine where each aircraft can provide the greatest operational benefit. Their objective is not simply to deliver water or retardant, but to maximize each aircraft’s contribution toward influencing fire behavior in support of firefighters on the ground.³˒⁴
